Things To Do
Walk, bike, kayak and canoe from your door: The roads around Flying point are wonderful and there is a lovely dirt road, Burnett Road, which connects Lower Flying Point Road to Wolfes Neck- it’s a nice 2 mile walk to Wolfe’s Neck Farm and the Little River just after the farm, which has some of the prettiest views in Maine.
Dining: There are many places to dine in Freeport, some of our favorites are Azure Café: Fine Italina dining, and for Seafood on the wharf, the Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster can’t be beat: http://www.freeportusa.com/FreeportDineList.html
Local Parks, Etc.: Here is a link to everything, but read on for some particular favorites of ours: http://www.freeportusa.com/FreeportPlay.html (also look at the page bottom of this linked page as there are many more interesting things by category!)
Wolfe’s Neck Farm: Open to the public including petting areas, trails, beautiful water views of Casco Bay, also camps for kids! Only 2 miles from the rentals:
Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park: A lovely place for a walk in the woods and along the shore, 2.5 miles from rentals
Winslow Park: A town park in South Freeport, picnics, boat launch and swimming, all on the shore, @6miles from the rentals
Reed State Park: this is a bit of a drive at 45 minutes up Rt 1 through Bath, but a very long sandy beach awaits: Click here
Also in the Bath area is the Maine Maritime Museum- an amazing place with fun stuff for history buffs as well as an excellent kids section!: www.mainemaritimemuseum.org
Mountains: If you wish to add mountains to your coastal vacation, you are in luck!
The White Mountains of New Hampshire are only 70 miles away and offer great hiking and views, plus car, van or Cog Railway options to the top of Mount Washington. http://www.visitwhitemountains.com
The Western Maine Mountains are approximately 80 miles away, with Saddleback and the Bigelow Range offering gorgeous hikes with views of Rangeley Lake and into Canada.
Further up the coast: We are asked about Penobscot Bay and Acadia National Park- Penobscot Bay is a beautiful place, 65 miles up Rt. 1. Rockland has a huge lobster festival and a Lighthouse Museum, plus the Owl’s Head Transportation Museum- if you are into old cars and old planes, do not miss this place! They also have fantastic events: www.ohtm.org
Camden Maine is charming and the view from the top of Mount Battie will take your breath away- a panorama of Penobscot Bay and beyond- Mount Battie State Park, 1 mile N of downtown Camden on US 1.
Acadia National Park- 150 miles away, this is a very long day trip but it is beautiful: http://www.nps.gov/ACAD/index.htm
